If deemed fit, Dravid affirms Shreyas Iyers return

Shreyas Iyer will rejoin the Indian eleven for the second Test against Australia in Delhi if his fitness evaluation demonstrates that he can handle the demands of a Test match, according to head coach Rahul Dravid. Dravid emphasized that when evaluating the team's composition, team management places a high value on a player's prior performances.

Iyer hasn't played since last month's ODI series against Sri Lanka because of a back issue, which also prevented him from playing in the New Zealand series and the opening Test in Nagpur. Suryakumar Yadav received a debut while he was out, but Iyer, who has since established himself as a crucial member of the Indian middle order in Test cricket, has been given the all-clear by the BCCI medical staff and is prepared to take his spot for the Delhi Test, which gets underway on Friday.

"I'm happy he's back and healthy. After a few of days of instruction, we'll take a call. He worked out for a long time today and did some training. Once he comes in for a light hit tomorrow, we'll evaluate that as well and see how he feels in the evening. However, if he is healthy and prepared to play in a five-day Test match, he will undoubtedly be selected for the team based on his performance "at the Wednesday news conference, Dravid remarked (February 15).

"It will be good to have him back, and he deserves it because he has been one of our better performers. And I believe that everyone on the team is aware of that; they know that if they are filling in for an injured player and he returns, which is likely to happen, then the same procedure will apply to them as well. Hopefully, we'll be able to provide them with the same care if they are hurt "Dravid added.

Iyer has played seven Tests and amassed 624 runs, including 1 hundred and five fifty-sixes, in those matches. He made his Test debut against New Zealand at Kanpur in November 2021. Iyer's ability to play spin well is seen as a crucial quality in Asian circumstances, but Dravid also highlighted his composure under duress, using the Bangladesh Test as an illustration, where he and Ashwin helped India emerge victorious from a hazardous scenario.

"Obviously, in addition to his skill at playing spin very well - he spent a lot of time playing domestic cricket before entering, so he obviously understands, he knows how to get runs - but I think at this level also what really counts is your ability to deal with those pressure situations, the temperament, the ability to find solutions and answers when you're under pressure, and I think from the little small sample size that we have, he's been very, very good at that"

India has a solid track record in Test matches played in Delhi, where they are unbeaten since suffering a loss to the West Indies in 1987. Dravid, though, claims that they are not interested in prior performances and that even the first Test has passed them by. Instead, they are focusing on the present.
